  • Vocabulary
    • "Create" means to make something. It's like when you use your imagination and make something new, like a drawing or a story. When God created everything, He made all the wonderful things in the world that we see and even the things we cannot see
    • A "firmament" is another word for Heaven and also the heavens that includes the sky and everything above it, like the clouds, the sun, the moon, and the stars. You can explain the firmament above by asking children to think of the big blue sky and then think about what is above i.e., space that we see more clearly when it is dark and we can see the Moon and twinkling stars. But Heaven in the Orthodox teaching is wherever God is, and we believe He is everywhere. Many prayers and Scripture verses do teach that Heaven is "above" but it's important to teach even at this young age that it is not a location somewhere in space!
    • "Creatures" are living beings. Creatures can include animals, bugs, and other organisms that are alive. They are part of God's creation and come in many different shapes, sizes, and types.
    • "Sanctified" is to make something special and holy. When something is sanctified, it means that it has been set apart as important and blessed by God. It is like when we take care of our toys or special objects, making sure they are clean and respected. God does the same with certain days or places in the church, making them extra special and holy.
    • "Eternal" is "lasting forever and ever, neverending." This means that something will never come to an end, it will keep on going for a very long time without ever stopping. For example, when we talk about eternal life with God, it means that we will be with Him forever and ever, never having to say goodbye .
  • Introduction
    • Although not directly related to the Learning Outcomes, teachers should know the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) is present in Genesis 1. As explained in the Orthodox Study Bible notes, God the Father made heaven and earth as we profess in the Nicene Creed, and the "Spirit of God" is the Holy Spirit. God spoke His Word who is Christ, and thus the Holy Trinity made heaven and earth. God is One and at this age we should begin using the same word for Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
    • Have the children look at the Icon and ask if they can see Christ creating the world. Teachers can also use St. John 1:1 and read, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Jesus is the Word, and in the Book of Genesis it was very intentional that "God spoke" and everything was created through the Word.
