  • * Her Life after the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ: The Account of St. John the Theologian on the Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God
    • St. John the Apostle is the first saint to be named by the Church as “the Theologian” because of the deep insight and depth of knowledge displayed in his writings. He provides a first-hand account of important details on the dormition of the Theotokos. St. John writes that while in Jerusalem, the Mother of God spent her time in constant prayer. St. Mary prayed that the Lord would have the Apostle John come to her from Ephesus (in modern day Turkey). The Holy Spirit transported him on a cloud to where the Mother of God lay. Together they prayed and offered incense. St John writes:
    • “And I prayed thus, ‘Lord Jesus Christ, who hast done wonderful things, now also do wonderful things before her who brought Thee forth; and let Thy mother depart from this life; and let those who crucified Thee, and who have not believed in Thee, be confounded.’ ...And the holy mother of God answered and said to me, ‘The Jews have sworn that after I die, they will burn my body.’ And I answered and said to her, ‘Thy holy and precious body will by no means see corruption.’
    • As the end of her drew near, the apostles of our Lord were preaching throughout the world. The Holy Spirit made it possible for them to return immediately from the corners of the world to honor the Mother of God. Almost all the apostles were there, including the Apostle Paul. However, St. Thomas was not. The apostles were overcome with grief over losing the Mother of the Lord and their spiritual Mother. But the Mother of God comforted them by promising not to leave them and all Christians after her death. She called each of them over by name, blessed them, and honored them for their faith and the hardships they endured in preaching the Gospel of Christ. She wished each one eternal bliss and prayed with them for the peace and welfare of the whole world. At the moment of her repose, Jesus Christ Himself carried her soul to heaven. The apostles who were present laid her body in a tomb close to Gethsemane and the Mount of Olives.
