Expanding Thoughts on Lesson

  • Lesson Introduction
    • Do you remember your first day at school? Do you remember how it felt when you had to say goodbye to your mom and dad and go to school? You might have been really scared and wondered if you would ever see them again. But then at the end of the day, you got to see them again. Today, you probably understand that they had to leave you at school so that you could learn new things from new teachers and friends and grow as a person. The disciples had an experience like this when Jesus ascended to heaven. They might have wondered How are we going to manage without Him? But then when they got their New Teacher, they would have understood they had much more to learn.
    • Teachers can also tie to Grade 4: "In Grade 4 we learned how Jesus ascended to heaven. In this lesson, we will learn how we remember and celebrate the event of Jesus' ascension, in icons, and in the liturgy." This forces us to build on that foundation, instead of repeating it, which can be frustrating for children.
  • The Second Coming
    • Jesus states the same thing through the parable of ten virgins (St. Matthew 25: 1-13) to show the importance of being prepared for when the Lord comes. The parable is of the ten maidens, five of whom were prepared for the bridegroom and five who were not. Here the Lord reminds us, “Be on your guard then, for we do not know the day or the hour” (v13). Before Jesus ascended He reminded the disciples the same “the times and occasions are set by my Father’s own authority and it is not for you to know” (Acts 1: 7)
  • Lesson Summary
    • And then at the end in conclusion we can say: “Just like the disciples, you and I will have many occasions where we have to say goodbye to our family and friends. Maybe when we go to middle school or college, or start a new job, or move to a new place. We have to remember that just like Jesus and the disciples, sometimes we need to have new teachers to learn new things.”
