Expanding Thoughts on Lesson

  • Introduction
    • While it is popular to think that it is the Feast of Pentecost that marks the "beginning" of the Church, the teaching of the Fathers is that the Holy Church is the "eternal" Bride of Christ. Some highlights from Volume 1 Issue 4 of Ma'altho:
      • 1 Timothy 3:15 - St.Paul calls the Church as "the pillar and bulwark of the truth." Can it be assigned that this ‘truth’ began on a specific day in Jerusalem about 2000 years ago?
      • In our Liturgy of Holy Matrimony - the last stanza of the song "Sabhayam Thiru Sabhayam ee" (which is the narration of the journey of the Church in search of her bridegroom the Christ) goes "Zion, my beloved bride; Come in peace, O my bethrothed!; I must go to my Fathers; Who will send you the Spirit." The Church was waiting for the Spirit -- waiting for Pentecost -- so how can the Pentecost be the first day of the Church?
      • In the Taksa, we start Holy Qurbana by remembering everyone from Adam and Eve who are all part of the Holy Church. The establishment of the Church was in the Garden of Eden.
