- Vocabulary
- Orthodoxy: Both “true teaching” (literally “straight doctrine) and “true worship (literally “straight glory”). Orthodox Christianity is the life in fifth given by Jesus Christ to the apostles and then passed down within the Church from generation to generation. It is not possible to be Orthodox outside the historical community of the Orthodox Church.
- Heterodoxy: “Other teaching” and “other worship.” Heterodoxy is anything that contradicts Orthodox Christian doctrine and worship. This term may also be used to refer to other non-Orthodox Christian groups.
- Doctrines: How dogma is taught. Dogma is the unchangeable, non-negotiable teachings of the Church. Doctrines can change somewhat over time as the Church encounters new cultural and linguistic situations in which dogma needs to be explained. Doctrines and dogmas are sometimes used interchangeably.
- Abrahamic Religions: The Abrahamic religions refer to religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam that claim Abraham as their common forefather. The Prophet Abraham is claimed by Jews as the ancestor of the Israelites, while his son Ishmael is seen in Muslim tradition as the ancestor of the Arabs. In Christian tradition, Abraham is described as a "father in faith" (Romans 4), which may suggest that all three religions come from one source.
