• Typology

  • Typology is a method of interpretation whereby a person, a thing, or an event found in the Old Testament is seen to prefigure one found in the New Testament. The initial one is called the type and the fulfillment is called the antitype. Typological interpretation is specifically the interpretation of the Old Testament based on the fundamental theological unity of the two Testaments whereby something in the Old shadows or prefigures something in the New. There are three types of typologies – the historical, the legal, and the prophetical.
  • An example of historical typology would be Moses in the Old Testament is seen to be a type of Christ. Moses, who leads God’s people out of slavery in Egypt and into the rest of the Promised Land, is clearly a foreshadowing of Christ, who leads His people out of slavery - sin, and into the rest of the New Promised Land – Salvation. An example of legal typology would be how the many sacrifices, offerings and rituals prescribed by God in the Old Testament point forward to the one Sacrifice to be offered on the Cross for the sins of all humankind. An example of a prophetic typology would be Genesis 3:15 – “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” This reveals that the struggle between good and evil to be played out in human history. Genesis 3:15 anticipates the conquest and defeat of the Evil One by the “Seed of the Woman” – who is Jesus Christ.
