Expanding Thoughts on Lesson

  • Christ Blesses The Waters
    • This may seem hard to understand but let’s look at Christ’s own words. St. Matthew 23:19 says, “For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?” In this example, Christ is teaching us that the Altar that blesses the gifts is greater than the gift. In Christ’s Baptism, Christ is the altar and the waters are the gift. Just as the gift cannot bless the altar, the waters cannot baptize Christ.
  • Christ’s Baptism Prefigured
    • In the story of the Israelites passing through the River Jordan the Bible precisely mentions that the feet of the priest who carried the Ark were only dipped into the River Jordan (Joshua 3:15). Similarly, Christ was only dipped into the River Jordan and not fully submerged.
